Our Methods
  • Literacy FirstLiteracy First
Literacy First is Marshall's adopted reading methodology that is comprehensive, research based, benchmarked, criterion referenced and aligned with diagnostic assessment tools. These tools measure: phonological awareness, phonics, advanced decoding, spelling, comprehension skills, vocabulary development, and strategic reading. The goal is to have 85-90% of students at grade level by third grade.
The TRIBES creates a positive, safe climate in which the students can learn appropriate life skills and the basics of group interaction. Tribes consists activities, which are based on the agreements of: mutual respect, personal best, attentive listening, showing appreciation with no put-downs, and the right to pass.
  • Integrated Thematic InstructionIntegrated Thematic Instruction
Integrated Thematic Instruction (ITI), is a "brain-compatible" teaching model developed by Susan Kovalik.  ITI is based upon the development and orchestration of one unifying year long concept and all its ramifications through which all content and skills are woven.   The theme acts as a pattern for organizing ideas, materials, and actions for both teacher and student.  There are three basic tenants to the ITI method:  brain research, curriculum development, and teaching strategies.
  • Positive Behavior Support Positive Behavior Support
Positive behavior support is an application of  a behaviorally-based systems approach to enhance the capacity of schools, families, and communities to design effective environments that improve the link between research-validated practices and the environments in which teaching and learning occurs.  Attention is focused on creating and sustaining systems of support that improve lifestyle results (personal, health, social, family, work, recreation) for all children and youth by making problem behavior less effective, efficient, and relevant, and desired behavior more functional.
